U J Ramelson - Etching Needle
Scratch precise lines into metal plates with hand-forged steel points
Heat-treated high carbon steel holds its point through sustained work on metal and glass. Ramelson needles resist the dulling and bending that frustrates etchers mid-plate, maintaining their geometry through copper, zinc, and glass surfaces that destroy lesser tools. The company's hand-forging process, unchanged since 1937, produces steel with the grain structure needed for edge retention under pressure.
Three tip geometries handle different mark-making demands. The fine stylus tapers to a sharp point for delicate cross-hatching and intricate detail work. Medium point needles balance precision with durability for general etching tasks, controlled lines without excessive fragility. Square-tipped needles create bold, consistent strokes when you need weight and presence in your marks.
Turned wooden handles extend 7 to 8 inches, providing leverage for controlled pressure without hand fatigue during extended sessions. The length matters when working larger plates or maintaining consistent angle control across varied gestures. Each needle is individually polished and sharpened before leaving the workshop, arriving ready for immediate use on prepared plates.
